Mask Fit Testing

Fit testing checks that the seal around the edge of your respirator doesn’t leak. Fit testing also includes training on how to care for and use the respirator.

What kind of fit testing do we provide?

Always Be Ready First Aid is able to conduct qualitative mask fit testing. This testing is pass/fail and relies on the user’s sense of taste using one of four OSHA-accepted test agents. The most likely testing agent to be used is Bitrex (bitter taste).

What is the cost?

The cost to register for a mask fit test is $30 if you register for one of the pre-scheduled dates. If you need to book a private date it is $50.

How often should you be mask fit tested?

OSHA requires qualitative or quantitative fit testing before a user wears a mandatory respirator on the job, and must be assessed every two years. In addition, fit tests should be performed:

  • whenever a different size, style, model or make of respirator is used, and

  • when any facial changes occur that could affect fit, such as significant weight fluctuation or dental work.

What masks are used for the fit testing?

We test with 3m N95s in three different sizes: 1870+ masks (80-90% of people fit this size), 1860 or 1860s.

You are also able to bring your own mask to be used for the testing if needed

When are mask fit tests offered?

Mask fit tests take place before/after each of the currently scheduled CPR courses. You are also welcome to inquire about separate dates/times if you only want the mask fit test.
